| WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN PICKING A CONTRACTOR | |
| Time tested craftsmanship, look for an established company or at the minimum be very comfortable with a new company. Often newer companies have limited working capital and customer experience which can result in problems for you. | |
| Hire a licensed contractor. In the state of NC the law requires board licensing for projects over $30,000, if your project falls below this you have the potential that you are working with a business licensed company which has not met the financial, educational and tested requirements to be board licensed. You can check for licensing at www.NCLBGC.org. | |
| Confirm insurance. State minimum is $300,000 per incident, however it is advisable for your contractor to carry a minimum of $1,000,000 per incident for the unforeseen. | |
| Be certain your contractor and sub-contractors have workers compensation, without this you can be liable for accidents on your property. | |
| Insist on multiple references, old and new. Also, it doesn't hurt to visit a project under-construction to see general standards and cleanliness. | |
| Look for the BBB logo and check your local bureau you can visit them online at www.BBB.org. Also, it doesn’t hurt to check other rating based organizations. | |
| Small down payments. Consider avoiding companies that require large down payments on the basis they need to purchase materials etc. Most companies have suppliers that bill monthly, not per the job. | |
| Go with your gut. Is the price too little?, do you feel comfortable with your salesperson?, do you feel comfortable with the tactics?, are they willing to give you some great deal if you sign now?. If is sounds to good to be true, it usually is. | |
