FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Should I try to build my deck myself?
A: Many types of decks are not extremely difficult to build when you are dealing with a ground level deck and have the proper tools, expertise, and free time. Exterior Additions recommends your deck be professionally built if the above does not apply or you wish to construct an upper level or complex deck.

Q: Do all deck contractors use company employed carpenters?
A: No. Many deck contractors use sub-contractors to construct you outdoor deck. We use all company-employed carpenters at Exterior Additions to insure the quality of our final project and to protect our customers from costly liens. If you consider any other contractors make sure to get lien releases if they using sub-contractors.

Q: Do you guarantee your work?
A: Yes!  Exterior Additions' work is completely guaranteed. If anything goes wrong with your deck due to faulty materials or improper assembly, we will fix the problem.  However, it is important to properly take care of your deck to prolong its lifetime (read a few of our deck care tips here).   It is important to realize wood exposed to the elements will shrink and swell with the seasons.  Wood will naturally crack and split at different times of the year.  Well protected wood will help you avoid severe cracking and splitting commonly caused by lack of protection from the sun.  Protecting your wood can be as simple as applying proper sealants and stains.  With proper maintenance, your deck should last and perform for years to come.

If you have any questions about the cost of a deck please call us at (704) 491-1684 or fill out our online service request form. Q: How do I protect my deck from the elements?
A: For wood decking applying a protective stain at least every 2-3 years will greatly increase the longevity of your deck. Exterior Additions recommend cleaning your deck at least once a year to remove moss and algae that will accumulate with time. Alternatively you may wish to use a low maintenance product such as EverGrain®. Be sure to check out our Deck Care page for more tips on keeping your deck and other home additions in tip top shape.

Q: How long does it take to build a deck?
A: The construction of a deck depends largely on the size and complexity of the project. An average deck may take as little as 4-6 working days to complete.

Q: Can I put a hot tub on my deck?
A: This is not a good idea. Many decks are not built to accommodate the weight of a hot tub. If you are considering constructing a deck for use with a hot tub be sure to strengthen the framework below your tubs resting position or use a tub support.

Q: I want a big deck with lots of different levels but cannot afford to do the entire project at once. What are my options?
A: Exterior Additions recommends developing a master plan that can be completed over multiple seasons while allowing for maximum use until the project can be completed. Building in steps will also give you the opportunity to determine if you really need to continue expanding your project.
